Spend Valentine’s Day with Your Real Soulmate

February 12, 2020

Valentine’s Day is not kind to singles. We tend to look at our state of singleness and see it as a less than perfect state. And certainly, God created male and female to be companions and helpers to each other. In Genesis 2:

18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. (NKJV)

I had to chuckle when I read this passage. God first created animals as companions to humans. Other human beings weren’t created until God exhausted all the options of pets as suitable companions. No wonder we love our pets! God thought they were a good idea, too!

I spent a number of years in my late 30’s and early 40’s being single. I was seeing someone, but he didn’t want to get married. However, that was a time in my life where I really grew in the things of God because I had time to spend in the Bible, at church services, and in a prayer group. I took real encouragement when I came across these Scriptures that addressed singlehood.

5 “For your Maker is your husband,
The Lord of hosts is His name;
And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;
He is called the God of the whole earth.
6 For the Lord has called you
Like a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit,
Like a youthful wife when you were refused,”
Says your God.
Isaiah 54 (NKJV)

The Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 7:8, 24, & 32-35:

But to the unmarried people and to the widows, I declare that it is well (good, advantageous, expedient, and wholesome) for them to remain [single] even as I do.

24 So, brethren, in whatever station or state or condition of life each one was when he was called, there let him continue with and close to God.

32 My desire is to have you free from all anxiety and distressing care. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord—how he may please the Lord; 33 But the married man is anxious about worldly matters—how he may please his wife— 34 And he is drawn in diverging directions [his interests are divided and he is distracted from his devotion to God]. And the unmarried woman or girl is concerned and anxious about the matters of the Lord, how to be wholly separated and set apart in body and spirit; but the married woman has her cares [centered] in earthly affairs—how she may please her husband. 35 Now I say this for your own welfare and profit, not to put [a halter of] restraint upon you, but to promote what is seemly and in good order and to secure your undistracted and undivided devotion to the Lord. (AMPC)

I did not look at these Scriptures as some kind of consolation. They pointed to a life and a plan that is bigger than just me. It allowed me to take my eyes off me and my singleness and to put my eyes on something more real than my desire for some fantasy romance. We are forever looking for that mythical soulmate, but our real Soulmate already lives inside of us. When Jesus left this world, He promised to send us a real soulmate – the Holy Spirit. This is how the Amplified Bible describes Him in John 16:7:

However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you].

Human love is fickle and subject to change, but the Holy Spirit never changes. If you have made Jesus the Lord of your life, the Holy Spirit lives inside of you right now. The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He will not barge into your life, but if you invite Him, He is ready to guide, teach, and comfort you. This Valentine’s Day give your heart to the Holy Spirit.
